II. Focus of Renewal Project

CAUPD undertook the urban renewal of Haikou as the technical general contractor, and established an inter-disciplinary working group of experts of such fields as planning, architecture, landscape, municipal administration, transportation etc. The Sanjiaochi area is the highlight of the project. In just about 120 days, the area regained a new look and vitality, becoming the most popular and dynamic place of the downtown area. In implementing the project, CAUPD adheres to the principle of "Peoples City for the People", and regards enhancing peoples well-being and promoting human development in an all-round way as the foundation of economic and social development. To be more specific, the following work were carried out:

1. Improve overall quality of environment

First, unify the architectural style. A holistic approach was adopted in the design of the entire street, especially in the lighting design, we used static lighting, warm white, warm yellow light to set the note for the night scene, creating a serene and pleasant, simple yet elegant ambience. We also demolished illegal structures and buildings to eliminate potential safety hazards, and added vertical planting to fill up the functional gap. Finally, we extracted the cultural motifs and elements and converted them into architectural language for applying to the details of the design.

Second, regulate traffic order. A people-oriented design was used in the renovation, giving priority to the efficiency, safety and convenience of pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Guided by the design idea of taking the entire street as a whole, we reduced the overall intersection area to shorten the distance travelled by pedestrian and non-motor vehicles without harming the efficiency of motor vehicle traffic. In addition, sponge city practices such as sunken green space and permeable paving were used in road reconstruction to put into effect the vision of green urban development and ecological urban development.

Third, enhance landscape facilities. Pursuing advanced concept, we created a waterfront leisure space in the central urban area that is rich in cultural flavor, able to fulfill ecological functions and a pleasant place to hang out.

2. Recreate scenes in memory

We recreated the “Haikou at its Best” touring line that evokes the memory of old Haikou by linking such places as the Chuang Hai Hun (Spirit of Venturing into the Sea) Cultural Center, Market Flower Street, Haikou Theater, Yulan Station, Donghu Tea House, Chuang Hai Qiang Square, etc.
