Chongyong Street is located between the Temple of Heaven and the Temple of Earth, and along it are many cultural relics and historical sites. It has been an important north-south thoroughfare and commercial street in the inner city of Beijing since the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), and is now a street where the density of historical and cultural sites is the highest and the flavor of old Beijing the richest. In the practice of the renewal of Chongyong Street, the CAUPD has made continuous exploration and gained the following experiences.

Tapthe quintessence of the city. The old downtown area of Beijing is the quintessence of the capitals history and culture, so in the renewal of this particular neighborhood, we need to dig deepthe cultural genes of it and innovate in the midst of inheritance. CAUPD did extensive research on the historical and cultural evolution and background of Chongyong Street, extracting its essential values and using them on the restoration of the downtown area in the old times.

Stay true to people-centered. In the whole process of plan formulation, we carried out diversified activities to encourage public participation. In implementing the plan of "Joint Governance of Chongyong", we invited the people to offer advice and suggestions, asked about their needs and for feedback, with the aim to create a new pattern of social governance featuring co-development, co-governance and sharing. Meanwhile, we set up the physical space of "Chongyong Lounge" for follow-up neighborhood development and assisting the neighborhood in building self-organization capabilities in the long run.

Build a multi-party collaboration platform. We built an implementation platform characterized by "government coordination, professionals collaboration, and concerted actions of various departments". We paved the way for inter-disciplinary cooperation between professional groups in planning, architecture, landscape, transportation, lighting, etc. Through the concerted efforts of design units, urban management committees, planning bureaus, neighborhood offices, etc., we pooled all the strength to implement the strategies in a holistic way and systematically solved the problem of protection and development of the old downtown area.

Positioning through comprehensive research. We decided on the overall positioning of Chongyong Street through comprehensive research and study in terms of its cultural pattern, history and current function and operation mode, traffic function and architectural style.

Take a holistic approach to the street and block. We took the backyard and the public space on the street as a whole, identified various inefficient spaces with untapped potential, and opened up part of the wall area to free up more space.

Establish a regulation mechanism of long-lasting effect. We formulated the urban design guidelines and regulation guidelines of Chongyong Street, making arrangements for various situations before taking any actions. We also launched a research project on the comprehensive improvement and upgrading of Chongyong Street, and put forward suggestions concerning the supporting funds, fiscal and taxation policies for various models of unified planning and self-construction.
