This is the first national standard on urban pedestrian and bicycle transportation system in China. In response to the green and eco-friendly development in the new era and the requirements of “carbon peak” and “carbon neutrality”, it specifies the fundamental role and priority of slow transportation in the urban comprehensive transportation system to cope with the current problems in urban transportation, such as squatting on walking and cycling space, disconnected passages, environmental chaos, and safety hazards. With “user-friendliness, integration and attention to detail” as the core requirement, it standardizes and streamlines all aspects of pedestrian and bicycle transportation, such as network, access and parking space, crossing facilities, surroundings, traffic signals, signs, markings, and interfaces with other modes of transportation. Guided by clearly defined targets, it intends to provide technical support to improve the environment for green mobility in the process of urban development and renewal. The standard was awarded the Third Prize of Science and Technology Innovation Award of China Association for Engineering Construction Standardization in 2023.
