Introduction:

New cities and new districts play a crucial role in the spatial development of urbanization and industrialization in China. They represent an important spatial phenomenon since the country’s reform and opening up. Over the past few decades, China has made remarkable strides in the planning and construction of new cities and districts. However, certain prominent issues have also emerged. This book takes stock of the development history, current outcomes, and challenges faced by new cities and districts in China. It provides a systematic assessment of planning, construction, and management for state-level new districts and representative development zones at the national and provincial levels, including economic development zones and high-tech zones. Based on this analysis, the book offers policy recommendations for the development and planning management of new cities and districts, takingaccount the national development context and relevant policy requirements. Additionally, the book selects nine representative national and provincial development zones for specific assessments of their planning, construction, and management.
