Introduction:
In retrospect, our theoretical reflection and practical exploration of the issues around urban diseases have progressed alongside the spiraling and systematic urbanization process. After nearly half a century of rapid development and construction activities, China’s cities have shifted in their models from extensive expansion to intensive efficiency, while the public demand for higher quality in the city’s material environment and spiritual essence has become more pressing. The efforts around ecological restoration and city betterment serve as a specialized technical program to support the transformation and development of Chinese cities in the era of renewal for existing resources. It focuses on addressing shortcomings and outstanding issues through a problem-oriented approach, while emphasizing the long-term integration of internal and external betterment via a goal-oriented approach. It aims to address the growing pains of Chinese cities in an integrated manner.
